Product Overview

The Raw Sand Specific Surface Area Tester (QR-SMT) is a precision instrument designed to measure the specific surface area (SSA) and porosity of silicon sand used in casting. Specific surface area refers to the total surface area per unit mass of material, expressed in m²/g, and is an important factor in evaluating the properties of raw and reclaimed sand.

The instrument adopts the ventilation method: it measures the time required for air to pass through a defined sand column, and then calculates the actual specific surface area using the national standard formula. The QR-SMT fully complies with GB/T 9442-1998 “Silicon Sand for Casting” and Appendix B “Method for Determining the Angular Factor of Silicon Sand for Casting.”

With its infrared sensor system, SM high-precision timer, and fully automated control, the QR-SMT ensures high sensitivity, excellent anti-interference performance, and reliable repeatability. A single press of the start button completes the entire measurement process, making it efficient, accurate, and user-friendly.


Working Principle

The test procedure begins by preparing a 50g (±0.01g) sand sample after removing mud and drying. The sand is placed in a calibrated glass test tube and gently compacted until stable volume is reached. The instrument seals the sample tube, and after the start command, air is passed through the sand column.

The infrared sensors (K1, K2, K3) detect liquid level changes, and the system records the ventilation time automatically. After five consecutive tests, the highest and lowest values are discarded, and the average time is used for calculation. The measured time is then substituted into the standard formula to determine the actual specific surface area (SSA) of the sand sample.
